Instructor Andrew Worthem, known as coach “Andrew” is dedicated and committed to his craft in teaching Chess in after school enrichment programs & summer camps ensuring social and excellence to each committed student.

Coach “Andrew” taught his first games of chess in Bucharest, Romania where a group of “gypsies” sold him a chess game.  He has taught chess for over ten years and works with several Atlanta summer camps where he teaches to:

  • Focus.
  • Think before you act.
  • Weigh your options.
  • Make your most logical move and accept the outcome – favorable or not.

“The study of chess helps students develop skills that can transfer to real life that involve patience, correct choices, reasoning and problem solving. All of which equals smarter and more confident students!”

Coach Andrew’s Chess History

1994: Observed 31st Chess Olympiad in Bucharest Romania/Moscow USSR

1993 -1995: Studied chess under chess champion Bopav Ramazan at the Rotaru International School of Ballet.

1995-2000: Chess Instructor at the Jacobs Academy Outreach Center in Atlanta, GA.

1998 – 1999: Chess instructor & Coach with Project Nobility at Spelman College in Atlanta,Ga.

2008 – 2010: Chess instructor for the Whiteford Elementary Community Program

2008 – Present:  Coach & Instructor for the Preferred Care After-school Enrichment Program

2010: Became a USCF Certified Chess Coach 

1995 – Present: Chess Instructor for Metro Atlanta Elementary Schools as part of the Educational Enrichment Programs  Those schools include:

Springdale Park Elementary, Mary Lin Elementary, Bolton Academy,.Parkside Elementary, The Main Street Academy, Deerwood Academy and the Kindezi Charter school of Atlanta.
